SIN joins forces with SON

Last year, we sat down with Jeffrey Gallant to talk about how we could collaborate on our respective goals of shark conservation. Jeffery is a shark researcher based in Quebec who studies the movement and behaviour of Greenland sharks and the president and scientific director of the Greenland Shark and Elasmobranch Education and Research Group (GEERG). GEERG’s […]

Everything’s coming up basking sharks

It has been a great summer for basking shark sightings. From Newfoundland to Cape Cod, these gentle giants have been popping up everywhere. Somehow, we missed telling you about the very first sighting–or should we say sightings–we had this year. On May 20, the officers, crew and researchers on board the CCGS Hudson saw SIX […]

Bread and cheese

A basking shark was sighted by Deb Young feeding in Bread and Cheese…..Cove, that is.  Deb snapped photographs of the basking shark feeding at the surface at the mouth of Bread and Cheese Cove, Bay Bulls, Newfoundland on August 19. Check out her great shots!

Basking in the Bay of Fundy in August

It has been smoking hot in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick this past week and many people have taken any opportunity possible to spend some time in the water to cool off! Basking sharks also seem to be lounging around at the surface of the water in the Bay of Fundy. We’ve had 4 more […]

A fine feast for a blue shark

Dr. Hilary Moors-Murphy was conducting research on board the NOAA Research vessel Henry B. Bigelow and on June 14, they passed by a dead pilot whale off George’s Bank. And there was something else swimming around the pilot whale, thinking they’d hit the jackpot: a blue shark! Check out her wicked photos below!

Basking in the Bay

Basking sharks appear to be popping up everywhere in the Bay of Fundy this year. On July 1, Brier Island Whale and Seabird Cruises snapped a great photograph of this basking shark with a very distinct dorsal fin. Since the end of June, Laurie Murison has spotted 5 basking sharks! Two of these were breaching, one was at […]

Basking Bonanza

It’s the summer of basking sharks! We’ve been getting several sightings and photographs of basking sharks from Cape Cod, the Scotian Shelf and the Bay of Fundy so far this year. Mark Brodeur has seen two basking sharks off Cape Cod this spring. He estimated the first one he saw was about 20 feet and […]

And we’re back

We have been offline for far too long, but there have been some exciting things happening over the winter and spring which included an exciting partnership, some new provinces joining SIN, and one of our team had a baby in October–the next generation of shark conservationists! But we are back with a vengeance and looking […]

The Big T

We recently received our first sighting from the west coast of Newfoundland! On July 23, 2014, Joe Brazil was out cod jigging in Bonne Bay and sighted something (or somethings!) that peaked his interest. He saw one (and possibly more) animals moving slowly with their fins showing but they never came closer than 75 feet. […]

Hammer Time

That’s right, we’re going to break it down. We had a really interesting shark sighting reported that had us stumped for a few days. Michael Greenan sent us some photographs of a shark he saw from a beach in South Carolina on August 15, 2014. The shark appeared to be searching for food and he […]
