All eyes on deck!

Over the last couple of months, we’ve received shark sightings and photos from naturalists and captains working on board whale watch boats, their passengers and sightings from other researchers working in the Bay of Fundy. Over the next week, I will be posting about what sharks other people have seen in the bay.

THE EARLY BIRDS

A lobster fisherman from Grand Manan told us that he started seeing basking sharks in the Bay as early as May this year—far earlier than he normally begins to see them.

Mate Durlan from Sea Watch Tours photographed a basking shark just below Gannet Rock on July 7, 2012, while they were out on a pelagic birding trip.

A day later, Laurie Murison, executive director of the Grand Manan Whale & Seabird Research Station and biologist aboard Whales-n-Sails Adventures, photographed a basking shark July 8, 2012.
